GENDERLAND FESTIVAL 2021

Supported by funding from Arts Council England, Genderland Festival will provide a space for members and allies of the queer community to dive head first into the gender spectrum, engaging with complex ideas of what it means to exist outside of the binary.

Join as we explore the topic of gender, in all its forms, with drag events, talking circles and workshops kicking off from Monday 27 September - Friday 8 October 2021!

The festival is aimed at members of the LGBTQIA+ community, artists and allies but organisers are clear that everybody is welcome. Those who want to learn more about gender and how to be a good ally are encouraged to take part. 
Events will take place in locations across Liverpool, with various COVID-19 safety measures in place.

Ticketing information

•Early bird – Full Festival Pass - £35 (£30.conc) - limited release, available until Saturday 18 September. First come first served. Click here to book.
•Full Festival Pass - £45 (£40.conc) - available from Sunday 19 September. Click here to book.
•Day Pass - £10-
£15 (£8-£12.conc) - available throughout, subject to availability. See events below for individual day tickets.
•Gender Cabaret - £10. (£8.conc) Please note: this event is not included in festival pass. Click

We recommend booking an early bird or full festival pass if you plan on attending on two or more days (as individual days cost £15).
 
Concessions are available for students, pensioners and those on a low income or in receipt of benefits. 

​Booking is required for all events unless specified. If you purchase a full festival pass, you'll still need to book your space at each event you wish to attend, as there are ticket limits for each session.

Welcome to GENDERLAND (FREE intro event)

​An interactive introduction to the festival with the folks from Mooncup Theatre. Festival organisers will host an informal discussion about the upcoming festival, line up and events. This is an opportunity for festival-goers to share their thoughts and aspirations for the upcoming schedule of events. ​

Genderation Z workshop

Monday 27 September, 7-9pm

​Workshop, discussion and Q&A delivered by Chris Porter from GYRO, Y
oung Person’s Advisory Service. 
Chris’ workshop will spotlight his work with trans and gender variant youth in Liverpool - highlighting key issues and how we can help to prevent them or overcome them. Free catering is provided for this event.

GENDER EXPLORATION WORKSHOP & TALKING CIRCLE
Tuesday 28 September​ 

This is a double bill of events, starting with a talking circle with Mooncup Theatre, with food provided, followed by a binary-breaking exploration of gender in a workshop with Andro and Eve's Artistic Director Finn Warman.

Andro and Eve Gender Exploration Workshop

Tuesday 28 September​, 6-8pm

This workshop will provide a space for those questioning or wanting to explore their own gender. Andro and Eve’s Artistic Director Finn Warman will facilitate this creative and playful session. 
 Using conversations and creative exercises, including creative writing and movement, the session will guide participants to reflect upon and be inspired by different ways to express gender in their own lives.

Gender nonconformity in 19th century Britain  

Wednesday 29 September, 5-7pm

​Explore the lives of working-class individuals who lived as a gender contrary to their biology in 19th century Britain with Dr Billie-Gina Thomason. This seminar will investigate the lives of those who were assigned female at birth, but lived, identified and presented as men later in life. Using census material, death certificates, marriage certificates, newspapers and more, the session will create microbiographies about their lives. Next we'll explore the individual’s physical appearance and how they gendered their bodies, their employment as hard working men, their relationships with their partner’s and finally, reflect on how the community reacted to their gender nonconformity.

InterGENDERational Day

Festival organisers will host a round discussion with opportunity for attendees to share thoughts and experiences of gender across the generations. A chance to learn from each other's unique perspectives, acknowledging previous battles fought and navigating with appreciation 
​the changing landscape of our times.

Drag up ya life workshop

Friday 1 October, 5-8.30pm

​The Spice Boys, (aka Mooncup Theatre) invite you on a gender-bending, binary-breaking drag workshop where, together, we will embrace our alter-egos, uncovering all the possibilities of who we could be. We explore movement, voice, creating your drag character, dressing to express and have a boogie through the binary.

Marking the halfway point of GENDERLAND festival is our weird and wonderful Genderland cabaret! Hosted by the The Spice Boys, join us for an evening of entertainment as our queer creatives take their time to shine. Expect Spoken Word, Drag, Movement with confirmed acts so far including; Baba Yagga, Felix Mufti,

Trans Awareness & Activism

Monday 4 October, 7-8.30pm

This workshop will look at how difficult it can be for some people to get involved in social activities and how we can best break barriers to their engagement with the public sphere. The event will focus on issues facing the transgender community and other groups. This interactive session will be delivered by two local activists, Kelly Stubbs and Claire Henderson.

Exploring the Gender Spectrum panel (FREE)

Tuesday 5 October, 6-7.30pm

​A panel discussion hosting voices from across the gender spectrum. Confirmed panellists so far include; Arthur Britney Joestar, Maral Svendsen, Connor Simkins, Connie Bostock from Liverpool Sisterhood and Kelly Stubbs. Panellists will discuss their personal experiences and understanding of gender, explore how we can learn to celebrate our differences and discover how we can support each other in our own individual journeys of identity.

Gender History: Where Do The Stereotypes Come From? with Dr Eloise Moss
​Tuesday 5 October 8-9.30pm

An interactive talk with Dr Eloise Moss, Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at Manchester University, where we’ll explore how the Victorians were largely responsible for creating the stereotypes surrounding ‘masculine’ versus ‘feminine’ behaviours and dress that we’re often still stuck with today! Expect to examine popular heroes and heroines of 19th century, sections from advice manuals and well-known works of Victorian fiction and question how far the binary actually dictated the way the Victorians lived, worked, (and loved), and gain a better understanding of how complicated and messy gender identities have always been!

Gendered Language & Queer Linguistics Workshop

From ‘Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus’ to notions of performativity and intersectionality... Join University of Liverpool’s Lotte Verheijen for a guided workshop which delves into how the relationship between gender and language has been viewed and studied over the past 50+ years. Free catering is provided after this event.

Gendered Language & Poetry Workshop

​​Shall I compare thy gender to a summer’s day?

A workshop providing an introduction to transgender writing via poetry, discussing how writers can sensitively explore the concept of gender within the confines of language. The workshop is delivered by Raphael Moore, a gay trans man, painter, teacher, and poet. At the end of the workshop participants will be invited to share the poems they have created.

The GRAND FINALE of the Genderland Festival is just around the corner. But before we bid our adieu come and join Mooncup Theatre in collaboration with Homotopia’s 'Safe and Visible’ project where we wonder and ponder ‘What is a Safe Space?’ and how we can create a safe and visible future for LGBTQIA+ people in Liverpool. Following this we will be a participatory workshop where we shall embark on a creative journey and let our imaginations run as we try to make our own utopian fantasy. (Free catering will be provided on the day.)

Genderland Festival - admin bits

COVID-19 information

For the safety of all guests, the festival will operate in line with current government guidance with regards to COVID-19. Events will be socially distanced and face coverings are strongly encouraged indoors.

At present, festival-goers will need to show a ‘COVID pass’ from the NHS app.
You can read more about how to access your COVID pass here.


Booking is required for all events unless specified. If you purchase a full festival pass, you'll still need to book your space at each event you wish to attend, as there are ticket limits for each session.

If you are feeling at all unwell, or have any of the main symptoms of Coronavirus (including a persistent cough, fever or loss of/change to your sense of taste/smell), we’d love to see you when you’re feeling better. 

Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell and if you do have COVID-19 symptoms, self-isolate and get tested.

Accessibility
